Raising a concern

Concerns regarding a human research project or MUHREC activity

To raise a concern or complaint regarding human research conducted by Monash staff and students or about the outcome of an ethical review approved by MUHREC, the following procedures are in place:

  • Contact the Executive Officer (MUHREC@monash.edu). They may resolve the issue or escalate it to the Director of the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity. If required, advice may be sought from the Chair and Associate Chairs of MUHREC and other relevant university officials while adhering to privacy legislation.
  • The outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the complainant, the researchers involved, and the head of the relevant academic unit. Depending on the findings, actions such as withdrawal of MUHREC approval or misconduct procedures may follow.
  • If the matter is unresolved, a written request may be made to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research (DVC(R)) for further mediation. The DVC(R) may dismiss complaints deemed unsubstantial and will consider the case closed upon receiving a complaint withdrawal or concluding that no further action is possible.
  • Decisions by the DVC(R) may be appealed in writing to the Vice-Chancellor within 28 days, stating the reasons for the appeal and providing reasons why they consider the decision of the DVC (R) to be incorrect or unfair. The Vice-Chancellor's decision is final.
