Defining data and its format
Research data comes in many guises and can be described in various ways. Monash's definition of research data is from the Research Data Management: Staff, Adjuncts and Visitors Procedure
- Research Data: the data, records, files or other evidence, irrespective of their content or form (e.g. in print, digital, physical or other forms), that comprise a research project’s observations, findings or outcomes, including primary materials and analysed data.
To ensure data integrity, reusability and reproducibility, you must properly name and define your data, adhering to standards for scientific terminology and information encoding as well as any industry practice relevant to your field of research.
Similarly, the format or form your data will take must be stable and durable to ensure the record of your research can be maintained.
