Research data training
Monash University is committed the support of researchers in governing and managing their data responsibly and effectively to ensure impactful research outcomes for people and the planet. The provision of relevant training is part of this commitment and is delivered to researchers from a number of sources, topics and modalities.
Some relevant training is compulsory - cyber-security, privacy, ethics - but most is available for you when you need it.
It is your responsibility to engage with relevant training, so below we have set out training offerings that are available to you to meet all your data obligations. Click on each of the headings below to understand what is available to support you.
The Data Fluency provides a range of workshops that focus on developing researchers’ skills in using, exploring, interpreting and visualising data in a meaningful way and in effectively communicating research and ideas. Alongside the workshops, the program aims to build a community and offer opportunities to engage in informal drop-ins, seminars and networking opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge.

Workshops are open to all Monash University research and professional staff, and Higher Degree by Research students.
The Research Data Governance 101 trainings are open to all Monash researchers and HDR students looking to maximise the value of their research data and improve their data management practice.
We cover:
- fundamentals of research data and its various forms through the research lifecycle;
- responsibilities of researchers in handling their data;
- research data classifications at Monash; and
- systems and capabilities available for research data.
There will also be opportunity to address your specific queries about how to handle the data for your ongoing or upcoming research projects and to receive personalised advice.

Research Platforms: Research Data Fundamentals Training is a an online training session available (and a record of the training created) via MyDevelopment for HDRs, staff and adjuncts. Please note you should log into MyDevelopment prior to clicking the link above
The module covers:
- The responsibilities researchers have in relation to their data and where these responsibilities come from
- How to classify resesarch data and choose the most appropriate data solution
- The benefits of planning (and maintaining a record of) how research data will be governed
- How to determine what, where and how long research data should be retained and/ or destroyed
Introduction to File Naming Conventions is a NEW online training session released in 2025 available for HDRs, staff and adjuncts. The module covers:
- the importance of systematic file naming and how to develop filenames,
- the use of different date formats in filenames,
- the use of leading zeros in different systems,
- the importance of version control and how to record file versions,
- a good example of a real life file naming convention.
Find and access Australian Commonwealth data is a training module that covers information on how to find available data for your research and request Australian Commonwealth datasets through the Dataplace platform.
