Alex Fulcher Bio

Alex Fulcher
Deputy Manager, Monash Micro Imaging (Clayton facility)
Alex received his PhD from Monash University studying in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His thesis, titled “Regulation of Viral Protein Nuclear Trafficking” relied heavily on live cell confocal microscopy to analyse the cytoplasmic/nuclear localisation of fluorescently labelled proteins, using techniques such as fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) microscopy to look at protein dynamics.
Alex joined MMI in 2011 shortly after completing his thesis, where he has developed advanced microscopy skills to present. An expert in super resolution techniques, he has collaborated on many projects using a home built dSTORM, Abberior STED and Zeiss LSM980 Airyscan2 and continues to collaborate with researchers on these advanced imaging techniques. Teaching and education are key areas Alex has focused on during his time at MMI, where he has participated in outreach programs, organising Imaris 3D analysis workshops, convened hands on super resolution STED workshops and, since 2018 has managed and supervisor student projects for work integrated learning (WIL) internships from two Master programs.
