Data Management

We support researchers by providing efficient, secure, and scalable solutions to store, manage, and access their microscopy data. Below are the key storage services available to MMI users:

MyData + Store.Monash

  • Recommended for most MMI users
  • Long-term storage, automatically linked with MMI microscopes.
  • MyData uploads files to Store.Monash, Monash’s primary research data store.
  • Set up during your first training session at MMI.
  • This is the only officially supported method for automated data transfer from most microscopes.

RDS Market (Disk Storage)

  • Ideal for fast access to large datasets
  • High-performance network storage managed by Monash eResearch.
  • Recommended for labs using high-throughput systems or working with data >1–2 TB.
  • Quota-limited: processed data should be moved to RDS Vault for long-term storage.
  • Contact MMI staff to check if this is right for your project.

RDS Vault (Disk + Tape Hybrid)

  • For long-term storage of large datasets
  • Cost-effective solution for archiving and backup.
  • Slower access but with extendable storage quotas.
  • Suitable for data >1–2 TB or long-term project storage.
  • Managed by Monash eResearch.
  • Contact MMI staff for access setup.

Monash S: Drive

  • Temporary storage for short-term file handling
  • Useful for quick transfers or active project staging.
  • Be cautious on shared computers:
    • Don’t store login credentials.
    • Disconnect drive after use.
    • Avoid reconnecting S: Drive at sign-in.
