Irena (Iska) Bio

Dr Irena (Iska) Carmichael
Manager, MMI ARA
Irena completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Monash University in 1995, where she investigated the formation of microtubules in plant cell protoplasts using live cell imaging techniques. She was awarded a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2001 for her work using confocal microscopy to study and quantify the growth of bacterial biofilms.
She joined Monash Micro Imaging (MMI) in 2009 during the establishment of the AMREP node, now known as the MMI@ ARA platform, and was appointed Platform Manager of ARA in 2021.
With a strong research background in fluorescence imaging and image analysis, she has extensive experience in widefield, confocal, live-cell/intravital imaging, and select super-resolution techniques. In her current role, she provides researchers with specialist expertise in advanced microscopy and quantitative image analysis, supporting a broad range of biomedical research projects.
