Stephen Firth
Manager, Monash Micro Imaging
Stephen is the Manager of the three core facilities within Monash Micro Imaging, located across the Clayton, Monash Health, and Alfred Health åcampuses of Monash University.
He began his research career in virology, contributing to the development of a rotavirus vaccine candidate in Ian Holmes’ laboratory at the University of Melbourne. He later moved into human molecular genetics, spending a decade in the Mercer laboratory at the Murdoch Institute and Deakin University, where he focused on the copper-transporting ATPases involved in Menkes and Wilson diseases.
In 2005, Stephen joined Monash Micro Imaging as an optical microscopist. He was appointed Manager of the Clayton facility in 2012, and in 2020, he assumed responsibility for all three core facilities. Over his twenty years at MMI, Stephen has trained numerous students and researchers and is known for his ability to teach optical microscopy through engaging examples and practical demonstrations.
