Preparing your Minto Assessments in 4 steps

Writing a business analysis using the Minto Approach will involve undertaking all four steps outlined below. However, the depth and emphasis of each step may vary depending on your specific task requirements, so ensure you follow the particular instruction provided by your lecturer.

Start by thoroughly understanding the business scenario or problem you’re addressing. Gather relevant data, financial information, market research, and stakeholder perspectives. Look for credible sources that provide different viewpoints on the issue. This research will form the foundation of your SCQA structure. When you’re researching, keep these questions in mind:
- What is the current business situation that everyone can agree on?
- What specific problem or opportunity is creating urgency?
- What key question emerges from this complication?
Before you start writing, map out your four key components. Your Answer should be your main recommendation or solution. Work backwards from there to ensure everything connects logically. Use these guiding questions to structure your content:
- Situation: What context do readers need to understand the issue?
- Complication: What problem creates urgency for action?
- Question: What obvious question does the complication raise?
- Answer: What is your specific recommendation or solution?
Unlike traditional essays, after the SCQ sections, start your Answer section immediately with your main recommendation (conclusions) or finding upfront. Then, use the remaining Answer section to support and justify your recommendations. Structure your essay with these elements:
- Establishing the business context with Situation, Complication and Question sections
- Your main recommendation (Answer)
- Supporting analysis organised by key themes
- Implementation considerations when applicable
Organise your supporting arguments into logical clusters that directly support your main recommendation. Use clear headings and concise paragraphs. Each section should reinforce why your Answer addresses the Question raised by the Complication. Include visual elements where appropriate:
- Tables comparing options or showing data
- Bullet points for key recommendations
- Charts illustrating financial impacts or trends
