PhD Writing Workshops and Courses

Available to all Monash PhD candidates, these workshops and courses are designed to equip you with powerful academic writing and presentation skills.

On successful completion, participants enrolled in the Monash Doctoral Program will qualify for professional development (PD) hours as listed here.

Intensive writing courses

These 10-part writing courses are designed to teach you powerful writing skills you can employ in your writing. Each session includes activities and discussions, and is followed by a weekly quiz to help you practice and consolidate your learning.

Literature review workshops

The function of a literature review in any discipline is for you to situate your research within the body of existing literature. Student Academic Success offers two different workshops that approach literature reviews from a disciplinary-specific perspective.

Writing Effective Literature Reviews in STEMM

This workshop introduces you to strategies to create a logical and coherent structure that reflects your understanding of the research area; and argue for the significance of your project while building on the ideas of others. Using STEMM examples, this session will allow you to evaluate your approach to the literature review and select strategies that will be most effective for your purpose.

Writing a Literature Review in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

This workshop introduces you to strategies to organise and critically review the ideas and arguments within existing research in the field, and position your own research in relation to it. Using examples from the Humanities and Social Sciences this session will allow you to identify approaches to integrating sources, building arguments and developing your voice as a researcher.
