Using AI productively, critically and ethically

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are becoming increasingly common in university study. Many students already use AI to:

  • explain difficult concepts,
  • check understanding,
  • generate practice questions,
  • help them get unstuck when studying independently.

In maths-based subjects, AI can sometimes feel like having a tutor available 24/7. However, like calculators, worked solutions and online forums, AI is only useful if it supports your understanding rather than replacing it.

This guide is designed to help you use AI:

  • productively,
  • critically,
  • ethically,
  • and in ways that support long-term learning.

Important reminder

AI tools can make mistakes, can confidently give incorrect answers, may use different methods from your subject and should not replace your own thinking. Always follow your unit's assessment and academic integrity requirements.

What AI should NOT replace

AI should not replace:

  • attempting problems yourself,
  • attending classes,
  • practising skills independently,
  • or learning how mathematical reasoning works.

Warning signs that AI may be hurting learning

  • You copy answers without understanding them.
  • You rely on AI immediately without attempting the problem.
  • You cannot explain the solution afterward.
  • You trust AI answers automatically.
  • You feel unable to solve problems without AI assistance.
