Student Perspectives: What matters most when choosing an employer

Understanding what students value when selecting an employer is vital for an organisation’s early careers strategy and successful recruitment campaign. As part of our commitment to helping industry build the workforce of the future, we regularly gather insights from Monash students to understand their preferences. Let’s delve into the findings to understand how organisations can best engage with Gen Z talent.
Preferred Employer Engagement Opportunities:

In response to the question, ‘While studying, what type of employer engagement opportunities would you find most valuable to consider working for an organisation?’, students provided clear preferences:
- Internships: Most students emphasised the importance of internships as their top choice. These hands-on experiences provide students with a chance to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application. Internships offer a glimpse into the day-to-day operations of an organisation, allowing students to understand the intricacies of their chosen field and what working in that specific organisation could entail.
- Casual Part-time work: A significant number of students showed a preference for part-time work, valuing the flexibility it offers to balance paid work and studies. This practical experience not only contributes to their professional development but also builds critical employability skills, making them well-rounded candidates for future career opportunities. The added benefit of earning an income while studying adds to the appeal of part-time work.
- Extracurricular Industry Projects: Many students also recognised the value of engaging in extracurricular projects that align with their field of study. These projects allow students to apply their classroom knowledge and collaborate on industry relevant initiatives, further enriching their learning experiences.
Critical Factors for Job Selection:

When asked about the most important elements they look for when considering a job opportunity, students’ priorities were evident:
- Work/Life Balance: A significant number of students underscored the significance of maintaining a healthy work/life balance. They reflect the growing desire for a harmonious balance between their professional and personal lives, recognising that a fulfilling personal life is integral to overall well-being. These students are on the lookout for employers who respect boundaries and provide flexible working arrangements when possible. A focus on work/life balance contributes to reduced stress, improved mental health, and increased job satisfaction. Organisations that prioritise this balance are more likely to attract and retain top talent.
- Career Progression: For a substantial portion of students, the potential for growth and advancement within an organisation was a top priority. They aspire to join organisations that not only offer a job but also a career path. These students value clear avenues for progression, including opportunities for promotions, skill development, and leadership roles. They seek employers who invest in their professional growth and recognise their potential to contribute to the organisation's long-term success.
- Company Culture: Not far behind, a high number of students acknowledged the significance of company culture. They place great value on workplaces where their contributions align with their personal values and beliefs. A vibrant company culture fosters an environment where employees feel a sense of belonging and purpose. This means more than just a statement or description of the workplace; a good company culture encompasses the organisation's values, mission, and the way people interact.
In a competitive job market, understanding what students’ value is key to attracting the best talent. These findings shed light on students’ priorities and can guide organisations in creating appealing employment opportunities.
