National Indigenous Disaster Resilience
National Indigenous Disaster Resilience
Safe, strong and sustainable Indigenous peoples and communities
National Indigenous Disaster Resilience (NIDR) is a research program within the Faculty of Arts, Monash University. Established in 2022, NIDR is Australia’s only Indigenous-led, nationally focused program investigating how major disasters affect Indigenous people, communities and organisations. NIDR champions Indigenous leadership in disaster resilience through research and engagement with Indigenous communities across Australia.
Our purpose

We find out what happens when Indigenous groups are impacted by major disasters.
This supports us to:
- Advocate for a fairer resilience system
- Foster relationships between Indigenous groups and the emergency management and resilience sector
- Create new knowledge
We achieve this by:
- Conducting research
- Holding events
- Producing resources

Respecting Indigenous data sovereignty
NIDR is committed to respecting Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights (ICIP), which recognises that Indigenous peoples are the custodians of their own traditional knowledge and cultural expressions, including those that are passed down over time and between generations.
We believe that ICIP is dynamic and living, and can change in the future. In our research and engagement, we follow strict protocols to ensure that all cultural knowledge and data shared are protected.
