Tracking disaster exposure

It is widely accepted that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are disproportionately exposed to major disasters, however there was no information available about this over-exposure at national, state and territory levels. We mapped the population distribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in disaster-declared areas.

Our work is laying a foundation in basic understandings of Indigenous experiences in major environmental disasters and how they are different to non-Indigenous experiences; and tracking progress and proposing meaningful actions governments can take towards equitable emergency management.
