Policy Roundtables
Project description
NIDR is hosting a Policy Roundtable on Aboriginal Disaster Resilience in each state and territory to inform priority reforms.
State and territory government emergency management arrangements largely exclude Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leadership, caring for Country approaches, or environmental and community values. To improve community preparation fo
r and recovery from natural hazards across Australia, it is crucial that we prioritise Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leadership.
To achieve this, NIDR is committed to hosting a Policy Roundtable in every state and territory. These roundtables bring together key Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisations, community leaders, emergency management and disaster resilience agencies to share information on disaster arrangements, hear about Indigenous peoples’ experiences of disasters, identify opportunities, points of collaboration and partnership, and priority reform areas.
To date, Policy Roundtables have been hosted by NIDR in South Australia, Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia.
