Director | Professor Paul Stupple

Professor Paul Stupple is Director of the Australian Translational Medicinal Chemistry Facility (ATMCF) at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) and an industry-trained medicinal chemist with more than 25 years of drug discovery experience across academia, biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry.

After completing his DPhil in Organic Chemistry at the University of Oxford, Paul spent more than a decade at Pfizer, contributing to the discovery of multiple clinical candidates across HIV and pain therapeutics. His career has included inventive contributions to five small molecules that progressed into clinical development.

In Australia, Paul led medicinal chemistry programs at Cancer Therapeutics CRC (later Canthera Discovery) that resulted in landmark licensing agreements with Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and Pfizer, including the KAT6 inhibitor program that led to the Phase III clinical candidate PF-07248144.

As Director of the ATMCF, Paul works with researchers across Australia to translate innovative discoveries into new therapeutic opportunities. He has played key roles in the formation of several biotechnology spinouts, including Phrenix Therapeutics, xCystence Bio and DACRA Therapeutics.

Paul has secured more than $14 million in competitive research funding and is an inventor on 39 patent families, with 33 patent applications resulting in granted patents. His research focuses on bridging the gap between academic discovery and commercial drug development to deliver new medicines for patients.
