Welcome to the Lazarus Research Group

Our research group focuses on improving science and medical coursework to better prepare students for their future careers in the biomedical sciences and healthcare.

We're part of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery InstituteMonash Centre for Scholarship in Health Education and Centre for Human Anatomy Education and the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology.

Our research

Our research focuses on exploring the relationship between discipline knowledge content and the teaching context. Within a learning environment, the hidden and/or informal curriculum (that which is not overtly taught but is still learned) are powerful drivers of what and how learning takes place. Our research focuses on how psychosocial skills are (or can be) taught within biomedical and clinical coursework in addition to teaching discipline content. Our research, therefore, helps build evidence around the best way to teach the sciences to foster critical future-protective skills such as ethics, uncertainty tolerance and clinical skill competencies.

  • Fostering Uncertainty Tolerance in Higher & Professional Education

    We explore how we can help our students manage the inevitable uncertainties facing them now (i.e. transitions), and in the future (i.e. pandemics, climate change, global economies).

  • Professional Identity formation in Health Professions Education

    Our identities as professionals form from our experiences; we explore how the classroom environment can help shape who we think we are as career professionals.

  • Improving Long-term knowledge retention of Anatomy Knowledge

    Learning in the short-term (for an exam) is easier then retaining this knowledge for long-haul, we look at how we can change our anatomy content delivery to foster the latter in addition to the former.
