Bangladesh National Summit on Infrastructure Development and Innovation July 2017

Under Monash Infrastructure’s Planning and Management theme, academics from the Department of Management in the Monash Business School are facilitating a National Summit on Infrastructure Development and Innovation. The Summit will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in July 2017.

The Summit in Bangladesh is a joint initiative between Bangladesh’s North South University, the Road Transport and Highways Division, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and Monash Infrastructure. The aim of the Summit is to share knowledge and experience between Australia and Bangladesh in infrastructure development.  Key representatives at the Summit will be government departments, multilateral institutions, academics and private sector partners.

Bangladesh is a rapidly developing country, aiming to become a middle-income nation by 2021.  The Bangladeshi Government has committed to developing major infrastructure projects such as highways, metro rail, coal ports, LNG terminals and special economic zones. Australia, Japan, China and India have recently announced commitments to fund major infrastructure projects in Bangladesh.  In October 2016, China announced it will provide financial support worth more than USD 20 billion for mega infrastructure projects.

Australia has significant opportunities to contribute to capacity building in infrastructure development in Bangladesh.  As an emerging nation, Bangladesh is faced with challenges in funding, developing and managing these projects in to the future.  Australia as a developed nation has world-class infrastructure and considerable expertise in design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructure.
