Effective planning and management is crucial in maximising economic efficiencies, productivity and life-cycle of infrastructure projects in rapidly growing communities. Monash University’s interdisciplinary researchers collaborate with the public and private sector to provide research breakthroughs that ensure the best possible solutions are identified and aligned for implementation across transport, water, construction, technology and social infrastructure projects.

Research capabilities

Monash has extensive expertise across many fields and can bring together the latest developments and research methodologies, to deliver advice and provide new insights for policy makers and decision makers in infrastructure development. Our insights, research and courses are influenced by renowned industry experts, practitioners and researchers.

Monash’s capabilities in planning for and management of infrastructure span many organisational units. These units include: Monash Business School; Monash Art Design and Architecture; the School of Social Sciences; the School of Biological Sciences; and the Faculties of Engineering, Information Technology and Law.

Monash’s strengths in infrastructure planning are in sociology, architecture, design, data modelling, visualisation of city systems and networks, project management, environmental impacts, finance and investment, and law and regulations.

In infrastructure management our core areas of expertise are workforce development, condition monitoring, big data analytics, information visualisation, asset life extension and supply chain management.

CASE STUDY

Supply chain management skills for the future

Monash University collaborated with GS1 Australia to develop a set of supply chain competencies that will give Australian businesses a competitive edge.

The research team at Monash’s Supply Chain Management Research Unit, led by Professor Amrik Sohal, found that there was an increasing need to develop the role of supply chain managers from operational into more strategic functions. Their research found that communication and teamwork were the most important competencies for successful supply chain integration. Knowledge of a broad range of technologies was found to be essential but their use was low in some instances.

The findings of the research study have provided guidance to academic institutions in their design of teaching programs. GS1 Australia has promoted the set of 20 competencies for supply chain professionals to its member base.
