Launch of new draft code of practice for modular construction
Modular Construction Code Pre-Launch
The modular construction sector is set for faste
r growth after the launch on 6 December 2016 of a new draft code of practice.
The Modular Construction Code is the first of its kind in the world. It is being developed by industry and Monash University, under the guidance of the Modular Construction Codes Board, with support from Engineers Australia, Australian Steel Institute, PrefabAUS, and the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources through the former Manufacturing Productivity Networks Program,. The design and engineering code is specific to modular structures, offering many opportunities around sustainability in terms of minimising waste in materials and time as well as maximising productivity and quality.
The pre-launch event on 6 December in Melbourne was a great success, attended by more than a hundred guests from industry and government. The launch generated a lot of interest and discussion from construction industry professionals about how the Code will help the industry to take advantage of the benefits of modular construction.
The Code will consolidate leading edge knowledge of design and engineering advances, while integrating and enhancing the application of physical and engineering principles to module manufacturing and construction. This event provided attendees with insights into important elements of the Code and an opportunity to engage with broader industry to develop this promising area.

Work was initiated by Prof James Murray Parkes, head of the Engineering Innovations Group at Multiplex. Its development was further supported by Monash University research work through Associate Professor Yu Bai, a leading researcher in Monash Infrastructure’s structures theme. Associate Professor Bai’s expertise is in innovation in modular construction and assembly and fibre reinforced polymer composites for construction. Other contributors include Angus McFarlane, structural engineering lead at the Engineering Excellence Group at Laing O’Rourke; George Konstandakos, general manager of timber building systems and former chief executive of Hickory Building Systems; John Lucchetti, a principal at Wood & Grieve Engineers and a director of prefabAUS, Brendon McNiven, principal in Arup’s building design team; and Dr Ben Forbes, from Monash’s Faculty of Engineering.
