SETU

SETU

Student Evaluation of Teaching and Units (SETU) is a way we get to hear from students about their experience of learning within a unit. The responses provide the University with a broad indicator of students' satisfaction with teaching and the student learning journey.

Governance

The University Education Committee (UEC) approves the SETU survey questions and format. They also consider the annual report, follow-up actions, and make recommendations to Academic Board.

Academic Board considers the reports and recommendations of UEC and may direct deans (or delegates) to undertake actions to improve learning and teaching, including the direction to review a unit.

The following groups within the University play a role in the management and administration of SETU.

Enterprise Intelligence & Insights (EII)

EII manages the systems, administration, and development of business processes to deliver SETU each round. The team also coordinates the bulk communications with students and staff, operational support, reporting/analysis, distribution of results, and maintaining SETU website.

Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Education) (DVCE)

The DVCE is responsible for recommending the SETU survey format and questions to UEC for approval. At least once a year, the DVCE (or delegate) will report SETU summary data to the UEC (for coursework units).

Faculties

Chief examiners, unit coordinators, and individual teaching staff must consider and review the SETU unit evaluation data and their own teaching evaluation data to identify and implement improvements, where applicable, to units and the quality of learning and teaching.

Associate Deans (Education) and nominated senior staff members will review SETU unit and teaching evaluation data across the faculty to:

  • identify strengths and weaknesses;
  • implement improvements, where applicable;
  • monitor and evaluate improvement plans in progress, and
  • recognise and reward teaching that receives excellent evaluation results.

Faculties are also responsible for selecting units and teaching staff for evaluation, monitoring and communicating survey response rates, and distributing SETU results within the faculty.
