Inclusive Makervan
Developed in collaboration with Wallara, a disability support organisation, the Accessible Makervan is a mobile makerspace that delivers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning to individuals with intellectual disabilities across Victoria.
The Makervan is equipped with essential makerspace equipment, including a 3D printer, laser cutter, and portable electronic kits, enabling users to explore and develop their own STEAM activities. Overcoming several limitations faced by a multisite organisation with distributed locations, the Makervan affords Wallara the flexibility required to adapt to the diverse needs and capabilities of local learning environments while promoting inclusive participation and exposure to STEAM resources.
The Makervan was co-designed via interviews and bodystorming activities with people with disabilities, disability support workers and Wallara's leadership team.

The Outcome
In 2024, over 1000 hours of STEAM engagement and learning activities were delivered, including electronics, construction, etextiles, laser cutting and 3D printing.
The MakerVan received a Good Design Award and was a Finalist in the Victorian Premier's Design Awards.
