Bundjalung Native Fruit De-Seeding Project

Bundjalung Native Fruit De-Seeding Project

Many Indigenous fruits and foods in Australia remain relatively unknown, with minimal research or investment into their potential. But what if we changed that?

Monash researchers have partnered with the Bundjalung Tribal Society to create an automated machine for batch de-seeding the lilly pilly – a native Australian evergreen fruit – to streamline its processing for commercial use in jams, cereals and other products.

The team has also conducted a national survey on Indigenous fruits, assessing their market potential and laying a strategic foundation for successful commercialisation.

By enhancing the economic viability of native fruit harvesting, this project aims to foster greater recognition of Indigenous culture and generate economic opportunities that directly benefit Indigenous communities.
