FIT Indigenous Student Guarantee

The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) Indigenous Student Guarantee is a student-centred program that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate students.

Through a single application, eligible students gain a clear and culturally safe pathway to scholarships, Industry-Based Learning opportunities, and placement grants—providing dedicated backing from enrolment through to graduation.

How to apply for the Guarantee

Eligibility:

Must be an Australian Citizen
Be enrolled in an on-campus undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University
Must provide a Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Heritage certificate or a certified Statutory Declaration form to the William Cooper Institute
Must maintain a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 50 or above each semester

Frequently asked questions

Students who apply for the guarantee and have a WAM below 50 can still access academic and student support. However, students must achieve and maintain a WAM of 50 or above to be eligible for the scholarship and the IBL program.
Indigenous Student Guarantee students will be paid $5k twice a year after the census date of each semester. If students apply after a census date, they will be paid $5k the following semester.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student;
- Be enrolled in an undergraduate Information Technology degree, including an eligible double degree, at Monash University;
- Have commenced your degree in 2024 or later; and
- Maintain a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 50 each semester.
You must also agree to the program’s promotional participation requirements.
You will need to provide either a Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Heritage certificate or a certified Statutory Declaration to the William Cooper Institute.

Eligible students are guaranteed a 16 or 20-week Industry-Based Learning placement with an industry partner, generally completed during the second or third year of their degree.
The placement counts for 18 credit points, equivalent to three units, toward your course. Students will also participate in industry interviews, seminars and the IBL Careers Fair.
Students can access a range of professional, academic and community opportunities, including paid work through the FIT Student Ambassador Program and participation in programs such as the National Indigenous Space Academy, Monash Student Teams and the Women in IT mentoring program.
Students will also receive ongoing support from the William Cooper Institute, including assistance with university processes, community connection, leadership development and career readiness.
