The Project

The 'Australia-Taiwan Collaboration in Addressing Legal and Regulatory Challenges in Sustainable Finance' project is a collaborative research and engagement initiative between Monash University, the Taiwan Sustainable Finance and Impact Investing Academy (SFIIA), and a number of leading universities from both jurisdictions. The project is funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (NFACR) in support of enhanced cooperation between Australia and mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Led by Associate Professor Cheng-Yun Tsang and Professor Gerry Nagtzaam from the Faculty of Law, the project aims to strengthen Australian engagement with industry, academia and community leaders in Taiwan, fostering dialogue and exchange to support a stable and constructive partnership in advancing sustainable finance and a net-zero economy.

Between 2025–27, the project will facilitate a series of workshops and annual summits co-hosted by Monash University, SFIIA, and our partnered universities including UNSW Sydney (Sydney), National Chengchi University (Taipei), National Tsing Hua University (Hsinchu), and National Chung Hsing University (Taichung). Topics will include climate-related disclosures, sustainable finance taxonomy, sustainable investments, regulatory frameworks, and market supervision and enforcement.

In addition to producing research reports, the project will establish an ongoing network serving as an alumni platform to reinforce long-term dialogue and cooperation between research institutions and sustainable finance experts. These activities are expected to further dialogue and collaboration in sustainable finance and relevant regulatory efforts.
