Professional Learning Course
The Movement for Emotional Regulation professional learning course helps primary school teachers to use our evidence-informed resources in their classrooms. Teachers will develop a greater understanding of children’s emotion regulation through movement breaks, learn how to use the Mood Breaker resources and be introduced to tips and adaptations that increase participation by all children.
Who is this course for?
This course is relevant for primary school teachers in Australian mainstream and specialist school settings who wish to integrate movement breaks and/or help their students with emotion regulation. The lessons also provide valuable learning for other education and allied health professionals.
Course development
This course draws from and extends the Joy of moving program in Australia research conducted between 2018 and 2020 which developed and assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a classroom-based program that empowers children to understand and experience the benefits of movement for their wellbeing.
A collaborative process engaging key stakeholders (i.e., children, caregivers, teachers and school leaders, and allied health professionals) was undertaken in 2023 to improve the Mood Breaker resources and gain an in-depth understanding of topics and additional resources needed to be included in the website and course. Further feedback was sought from education, disability and health experts, Victorian and NSW Department of Education representatives, and marketing and communication specialists.
The Mood Breaker storybooks were reviewed and edited by award-winning children’s author, Coral Vass. Illustrations on the Mood Breaker storybooks and movement cards were done by designer and illustrator, Mary Rose Avent. Videos were recorded with stakeholders by Monash Education digital content experts.
Course outcomes
Completion of lessons may contribute towards teaching registration requirements in Australian states and territories.
