Medicines for Malaria Venture
In 2022, malaria was responsible for an estimated 608,000 deaths worldwide, with the vast majority of these deaths occurring in Africa. Children under five years old are the most vulnerable group, accounting for about 80% of all malaria deaths.
Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Science's (MIPS) collaborative drug discovery research activities and licences have contributed to MMV's portfolio of antimalarial medicines, as well as neglected diseases such as human African trypanosomiasis, Leishmania and Chagas disease.
This work is highly significant, considering the high death tolls from malaria each year worldwide and the additional 500 million people who suffer its debilitating effects.
