Monash Venture Studio launched as new incubator for spinouts
Monash Innovation has launched Monash Venture Studio, a new addition to their Innovation Ecosystem and an exciting new initiative designed to accelerate research entrepreneurship and innovation. This collaboration, led by The Generator and Monash Innovation, will provide a faster and more efficient pathway for spinning out groundbreaking innovations from the university.
The Monash Venture Studio is built on international best practices and offers a scalable way to provide advice, expertise, and community support to research groups working towards a spinout pathway. Critical elements of this approach include the collaborative effort, where teams work together within the Monash Venture Studio to set objectives, identify challenges, and learn from each other as well as providing critical support and access to mentor and investor networks.
Five teams of researchers from Monash University, selected for their engagement with Monash Innovation and their high potential for a spinout pathway, participated in the inaugural Venture Studio session.
Dr Alastair Hick, Chief Commercialisation Officer at Monash University, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “The Monash Venture Studio is a game-changer for our research community and innovation ecosystem. By formalising and enhancing our support structures, we are empowering researchers to bring their innovations to market more efficiently and effectively.”
The Generator, Monash University’s entrepreneurial hub, has a long-standing history of supporting researchers on their journey to commercialisation. Through its existing programs, The Generator has been instrumental in guiding researchers towards successful spinouts. Dr Simon Wilkins, Head of The Generator, highlighted the importance of this initiative, saying, “The Monash Venture Studio builds on our strong foundation, providing researchers with the resources, expertise, and community they need to succeed”.
Bringing extensive experience to the Venture Studio, is the Monash Innovation New Ventures team. This team is responsible for deploying investment into early-stage spinouts through the Monash pre-seed fund and the co-investment arrangement with the Breakthrough Victoria University Platform initiative. They also manage a portfolio of over 30 companies in which Monash already holds equity.
The launch event marks the first opportunity for these research teams to meet, connect with key stakeholders, engage with the Venture Studio team, and learn from successful research-spinout founders. Moving forward, the Monash Venture Studio will offer regular sessions, workshops, and structured engagements to accelerate the timeline to their agreed commercial milestones, whether that be successful investment attraction, partner engagement, or acquisition.
“In my experience, innovation happens best as part of an evolving ecosystem where different parties and programs come together in a supportive and collaborative environment. The Monash Venture Studio is one interconnected element that will help us drive successful innovation from Monash and help it from the lab to the market or achieve impact in society,” added Dr Hick.
