Hamza Surbuland

Hamza Surbuland is a PhD student in Islamic intellectual history and Muslim political thought, working under the supervision of Dr Aydogan Kars and Dr Kathleen Neal. His research looks at formations of state power in regulation of public morality (Hisba) in pre-modern Muslim societies and polities, with an anticipated focus on Mughal India. He graduated from Melbourne University with an M.A (Research) in Islamic Studies in 2023, and with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland in 2018, majoring in Political Science. His Honours thesis on Professor Wael Hallaq's deconstruction of the modern state-form received a First Class ranking. Hamza's other interests are in the Islamic literary tradition, Sufism, and Public Policy.
His academic publications include a 2022 article in the Melbourne Asia Review, 'Political Islam(s) in the Pakistani Context: inclusionary and exclusionary'.
