- Degree(s) Master of International Development Practice
We sat down with Monash student Megha to find out more about her experience studying a Masters in International Development Practice (MIDP). Here’s what she had to say:
Tell us a bit about yourself. Area of study? Where are you from?
My name is Megha. Originally from Kerala, India, I undertook all of my schooling in India and also completed a bachelor's degree before undertaking a dual degree, a Masters in International Development Practice (MIDP) from Monash and the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS).
Since I was young, I have always been a creative soul with an ambitious mindset, constantly aiming to contribute to a better world for all living beings. As such, my passion lies in the field of development, focusing on sustainability and advocating for human welfare. During my school years, I developed a keen interest in the social sciences, particularly economics, which led me toward my bachelor's degree and my current journey with Monash as I look to put this passion into practice.
Please share your involvement in the Youth Summit as part of the MENA Climate Week 2023.
As a part of the MENA Climate Week 2023, I served as a representative for the youth participants alongside around 100 students who all hailed from different universities. Together, we were representing both our universities, in my case Monash, as well as the SDSN Youth (Sustainable Development Solutions Network). Participating in the event was a valuable opportunity for me as it presented me with and allowed me to consider diverse perspectives on the issue of climate change and allowed me to share my thoughts and concerns on this critical topic.
What advice would you give to a young person considering studying MIDP?
I advise anyone who is passionate about international development, or simply curious and open-minded about global economics to consider studying a MIDP with Monash. True immersion in this field of study requires a genuine interest in making a positive impact on the world, as well as the willingness to learn and adapt. Considering international development is a dynamic and ever-evolving field, I’ve found that studying it empowers you to embrace a global perspective and encourages you not to shy away from challenging the status quo but instead be ready to explore innovative solutions. Finally, remember that change takes time and persistence, particularly on a global scale, so you must stay committed to your goals and keep learning throughout your journey.
What are the benefits of studying at Monash, and why is it important?
I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to be a Monash student. It’s no secret that Monash is globally renowned for delivering high-quality education and that it has an abundance of study materials accessible to students that often are not readily available elsewhere. Beyond unparalleled academic opportunities, I’ve also had the chance to participate in various extracurricular activities such as the Climate Week conference and build long-lasting meaningful relationships with like-minded students who would like to make an impact on the global scale.
What was the catalyst in choosing Monash to study MIDP? What influenced your chosen career path?
I chose Monash for my MIDP studies primarily due to the University's exceptional global reputation and strong focus on international development. I was also intrigued by Monash’s course structure and unique commitment to international collaboration in education which allowed me to spend my first year of study at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, one of India's most reputable institutions.
While TISS gave me an in-depth understanding of my home country, India, Monash built upon these foundations and offered a next-level, fresh perspective, enriching my knowledge with insights from Australia and the rest of the world. When I decided to pursue this course, I was confident that it would provide ample opportunities for personal and academic growth and my expectations have not only been met but exceeded.
Why are you passionate about your area of study?
I have always been genuinely passionate about my area of study, international development practice. This passion has been a driving force in my life because it allows me to align my career with an aspiration to positively impact the world. I firmly believe that the global challenges we face today whether in terms of environmental sustainability, social equity, or human welfare all demand dedicated action and change. This ideal is what motivates me every day. Empowered by Monash and the teachings of international development more broadly, I'm committed to addressing today's complex global challenges with a multidisciplinary approach.
We understand that you attended a prestigious conference and the selection is competitive. How do you think you managed to stand out from the crowd?
I'm still in awe of the incredible opportunity I was offered to be part of the prestigious MENA Climate Week 2023. The entire week I spent in Riyadh it seemed almost surreal.
I vividly recall the selection process, where we had to answer some questions. One thing was absolutely clear to me: my answers were sincere and authentic, stemming from a genuine concern for our world and its future. As I penned down my solutions and visions regarding climate change and its potential repercussions, I felt that what separated me was a clear passion to inspire global change and a recognition of the importance of education in assisting that journey. I also believe my academic journey at Monash University equipped me with a diverse global perspective and unique development skills which no doubt shone through in my participation at the conference.
