Specialisations (in the Bachelor of Media Communication)

Journalism

This specialisation equips you with the tools to tell compelling stories across digital, audio, video, and print platforms. It combines theory and practice, developing your skills in writing, communication, and media production. With hands-on experience in the Monash Media Lab, you’ll explore the ethical principles shaping journalism today. You’ll be prepared for careers in news reporting, editing, broadcasting, and digital media, where you can shape public understanding and keep society informed.

Media

This specialisation equips you to navigate today’s fast-evolving media landscape, from social media strategy to media relations and policy. You’ll gain a solid understanding of the shift from broadcast to networked media systems and learn to make ethical decisions in a global context. You’ll be prepared for careers in media management, communications, public relations, and content strategy, where you’ll address the challenges shaping the media industry.

Public relations

In this specialisation, you’ll explore public relations theories while mastering stakeholder management and reputation building. You’ll develop key skills in public opinion analysis, issue identification, and crisis management. You’ll be prepared for careers in corporate communications, media relations, and public affairs, where you’ll address the challenges of globalisation and new media on modern public relations practices.

Screen

Screen industries are rapidly evolving, with shifts in technology, formats, and cultures across Australia, Asia, Europe, and Hollywood. This specialisation helps you understand the transformations shaping media, from local to global and analog to digital economies to the representation of gender, race, and class on screen. You’ll gain practical video production skills, preparing you for careers in film, television, and digital media, where you’ll address key issues across screen cultures.
