Monash journalism pays tribute to award-winning sports journalist Sam Landsberger
Herald Sun sports journalist and former Monash sports journalism tutor and colleague Sam Landsberger died after he was hit by a truck in Richmond yesterday.
Sam was 35 years old. He was on his way to meet a colleague in Richmond when he was hit by a truck at the corner of Church St and Bridge Rd. Sam was taken to The Alfred hospital, where he had surgery but could not be saved.
Sam was a high-achieving Monash University graduate who obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) in 2011. He was an award-winning sports journalist who was a great story breaker, wrote sensational colour pieces on AFL Grand Final day and covered the Ashes in England.
He is one of Monash's most successful graduates of the sports journalism program. He was in the founding sports journalism year in 2010 and graduated soon after.
Sam had already secured a job at the Herald Sun.
Monash University sports journalism lecturer Julie Tullberg said Sam was a passionate journalist who lived life to the full and his successful journey had been tragically cut short.
"Sam was a shining light, a prodigious talent who loved sports journalism," Julie said. "Sam was an outstanding alumnus, a supportive colleague and sports journalism tutor, and a gifted writer.
"Our hearts are broken for Sam, his Monash mates and his wonderful family. Our deepest condolences to Jake, Anne, Jess, Sarah and Sam's wider family, friends and colleagues."
