New sport journalism fellowship to honour the legacy of Sam Landsberger

Sam Landsberger at the Quill Awards

The Sam Landsberger Sport Journalism Fellowship has been launched to honour the enduring legacy of the Monash University alumnus and respected Herald Sun journalist.

Sam was a gifted writer who entertained masses of fans across AFL, cricket and the wider sporting landscape.

He died in tragic circumstances in 2024. He was 35.

Sam’s connection to Monash came full circle throughout his career. He was part of the university’s founding sports journalism cohort in 2010, graduating in 2011 after already securing a role at the Herald Sun.

Several years later, he returned as a respected sessional academic, teaching undergraduate students and providing guest lectures to Master’s students.

Sam was a passionate Bulldogs fan who shared his love of football with his father and long-time club doctor Dr Jake Landsberger.

Monash sports journalism lecturer Julie Tullberg remembered Sam for his prodigious talent and humility.

“Sam was always trying to get the best out of himself,” Julie recalled.

“Several years after graduating, Sam reached out about a teaching role. He was driven to refine his presence and deepen his connection with the audience in broadcast media.”

Julie noted that Sam became a superstar on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle, where his sharp AFL insights and intelligence were on full display.

He possessed a brilliant mind for the game and a deep respect for his craft.

A joint initiative of the Melbourne Press Club, the Western Bulldogs, and the Herald Sun, the fellowship provides a paid six-month internship for a media/journalism graduate or a Year 12 graduate.

The fellowship opportunity is available for residents of Melbourne’s western suburbs.
