Oral historian Dr Anisa Puri awarded the 2021 Faculty of Arts Prize for Outstanding PhD Thesis

Oral historian Dr Anisa Puri has been awarded the 2021 Faculty of Arts Prize for Outstanding PhD Thesis (John Rickard Prize).

Dr Puri, who also completed her Bachelor of Arts (History and Journalism) and Master of Public History with Monash Arts, was awarded the prestigious prize for her work “Youth Migration to Postwar Australia (1946-1973): A Social, Cultural, and Oral History.”

Dr Puri has over ten years' experience working as a professional historian within and beyond academia. She has worked on several large-scale national oral history projects at universities across Australia, and has also held appointments in the heritage industry where she specialised in heritage interpretation. Dr Puri is also a past President of Oral History NSW. She is now working as a consulting historian, and her current projects include working as an Oral History Interviewer for the National Library of Australia’s Oral History and Folklore Branch.

Throughout her PhD, Dr Puri was supervised by the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies’ Professor Alistair Thomson, Professor Nathalie Nguyen, Associate Professor Agnieszka Sobocinska and Dr Kate Murphy.

The Prize for Outstanding PhD Thesis award is supported by Emeritus Professor John Rickard. Professor Rickard, a well-respected member of Historical Studies at Monash until his retirement in 1999, has written widely on Australian culture and biography, including Australia: A Cultural History, now in its third edition.

Congratulations also to Ms Hannah Skipworth, for receiving the Vice-Chancellor’s Commendation for Thesis Excellence and the Faculty of Arts Research by Master’s Prize, and to Dr Kelsey Perrykkad for receiving the Faculty of Arts Outstanding PhD thesis – High Commendation.
