Hualien, Taiwan. The chapter developed from this paper will also be published as part of a scholarly volume entitled The European Union and East Asia in 2023.

The conference was opened by Mr. Fedja Zlobec, Deputy Head of Delegation, and Head, Political, Press and Information Section, Delegation of the European Union to Australia. The Conference Chair, Dr. Rémy Davison, delivered a paper on ‘The EU shadow economy and off-shore labour’. He also delivered an additional paper on ‘Quo vadis “Zhong ou Guan Xi”: China-EU Relations? Europe’s Pivot to the Indo-Pacific’, co-authored with Dr Nina Markovic Khaze (Macquarie University, Sydney).

Dr Davison also acted as a Panel Chair for the CES conference.

Dr Davison welcomed the UK Consul-General, Mr Stephen Lysaght and Monash alumna, the UK trade and investment manager, Ms Caitlin Gheller, to Monash University to give a guest lecture, looking at Global Britain’s past and present, and its politics, security, trade and investment after Brexit.

Professor Michael Doherty was nominated to chair the group to review the industrial relations and collective bargaining landscape in Ireland. Professor Doherty has been nominated by Tánaiste and Employment Minister, Leo Varadkar, to Chair a high-level group to review the industrial relations and collective bargaining landscape in Ireland. The group will examine collective bargaining, union recognition and will seek to "examine the adequacy of the workplace relations framework" around pay and conditions. Many congratulations to Michael on his appointment to this important post.

Dr Davison and Professor Mascitelli (Jean Monnet Chair and RMIT EU Centre) presented a joint session on the EU, US and China to the Victorian Secondary Teachers’ Summer School, Melbourne. Dr Davison delivered a paper launching the Jean Monnet PROCAM paper in Melbourne at the 2020 ESAANZ annual conference, outlining the PROCAM project. He also delivered a second paper, co-authored with Dr Khaze, on the EU-China relationship.

Dr Davison addressed a Round Table of the Delegation of the European Union in Canberra, with Dr Ivana Damjanovic (ANU) and Dr Khaze (Macquarie University), chaired by the EU Delegation Trade Counsellor. Dr Davison spoke on the implications of the Next-Gen EU’s €750 billion injection of grants and bonds into areas such as renewable resources and green jobs.
