Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou)

Monash is honoured to be the first Australian university to receive a licence to operate in China, one of the world's largest and fastest-growing economies, in offering postgraduate degrees at the masters and PhD levels.

Our international collaboration at Suzhou with the Southeast University (SEU) – one of China’s key national universities – will produce postgraduates and researchers with ideas to change people’s lives in the region and the world for the better.

The Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) is one of the largest innovation precincts in China and recognised as one of the world's most dynamic places for turning clever research into valuable industrial processes and products. It's a hub of 21st century brainpower for more than 100 Fortune 500 companies and 15 international universities and research institutes. And all just half an hour by high speed train from Shanghai.

The SEU-Monash partnership consists of the Joint Graduate School and Joint Research Institute.

The Joint Graduate School for Graduate Education is currently offering masters by coursework programs in:

  • Information Technology
  • International Business
  • Transportation Systems
  • Interpreting and Translation Studies
  • Industrial Design

Other double masters are in the planning and may be offered at a future date. Students successfully completing the Double Masters at the Joint Graduate School will graduate with both a SEU and Monash masters after two years of study.

Students taking the Joint PhD program will spend at least 12 months of their PhD candidature at the Monash University Australia campus, and will be co-supervised by at least one supervisor from each university. PhD programs are available in:

  • Arts
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Science
  • Business and management

The Joint Research Institute has four research centres covering the following broad areas :

  • Future cities
  • Energy and environment
  • Advanced materials and manufacturing
  • Advanced computation in science and engineering

The JRI aims to attract outstanding researchers and high calibre research students. Research is not limited to the above areas only, and research in other areas will also be strongly encouraged and nurtured. It is the intention to build up a critical mass of researchers at the JRI and strengthen relationships in R&D with local and international industries and other institutions in China.
