FUNDING

Where does the funding come from?

The Castan Centre sources funding from Daniel Besen, Sylvia & Michael Kantor, the Chestnut Foundation and the Bennelong Foundation.

It also receives funding from the Monash Law Faculty's Student Mobility Fund

Can I apply if I have previously received funding for an overseas internship or study abroad?

You are not disqualified from applying if you have received funding from other sources at Monash University, such as the Monash Abroad fund. Monash Abroad typically provides funding for students who go on exchange, study abroad and short term programs as well as the Prato and Malaysia programs. If you have received such a payment, you are still eligible to apply for this program.

However, if you have previously received funding from the Monash Law Faculty's Student Mobility Fund, this amount will be reduced by the amount of any previous grants from this fund.

If you have previously received funding for a trip and you are not sure which fund it came from, contact the Castan Centre's Administrator Janice Hugo.

What if I have applied to the SMF in the past but have been unsuccessful?

You are still eligible for the Global Internships.

Can I apply if I have received money from Monash Abroad in the past?

This is a separate fund from SMF, receiving money from Monash Abroad is separate and does not exclude you from applying for the Global Internship Program.

Can I also Apply for Equity Funding?

Yes, in addition to the Castan Centre Global Internship funds, you may apply for an equity scholarship if you fit into one of the six categories. Equity scholarships are not administered by the Castan Centre or the Law Faculty.  You must apply for them yourself. Click here for details of the equity categories, and here for information on how to apply. Students are advised to apply for Equity Grants by the Equity Grant application deadline. Applying for Equity Funding will not effect your chances of being selected for an internship as the two processes are entirely separate.

ELIGIBILITY

Can I apply if I am a postgraduate Student?

All Global Internships are open to students enrolled in a postgraduate coursework program (JD or LLM by coursework) (both full-time and part-time). You must have at least one unit left to complete in your degree after you would finish the internship and satisfy the eligibility requirements.

Students are eligible to apply for any of the Global Internships so long as they have at least one unit left to complete in their degree after they would finish the internship and satisfy the eligibility requirements.

I have not met all the eligibility requirements or will not have met all the eligibility requirements by the start of the internship. Can I still apply?

No, you need to have satisfied all the eligibility requirements before starting the internship in order to be eligible. This requirement is not negotiable.

Can I apply for a Global Internship if I have previously been an Aurora Intern?

It depends. If you received SMF funds for your Aurora internship, you will not be eligible for a Global Internship. If you did not receive SMF funds for your Aurora internship then you can apply for a Global Internship.

Can I apply if I have previously been a Castan Centre In-House Intern?

Yes. The programs are entirely separate.

How many internships may I apply for?

You may apply for a maximum of three internships.

I am an international student. Can I apply for a Global Internship?

You may apply for those internships which fall between the academic years. Because international students cannot defer studies, they may not apply for internships which fall during semester.

OTHER

Do I get course credit for completing a Global Internship?

Not automatically, however you may choose to do the Faculty’s stand-alone research subject. This is the equivalent of one unit and requires you to write a research paper on a topic linked to your internship. You must locate your own supervisor for this.

Students who have previously taken this option reported that it was very difficult to do a 12-week full-time internship and then return home just in time for their studies while trying to complete a long research paper.

Can I defer my internship?

No. You must go at the time specified by your host institution, although most host organisations are willing to find dates that are mutually beneficial.

Will the Castan Centre organise my flights, accommodation or visa?

No, you are expected to organise your own travel.

We will put you in contact with your host organisation and past interns who can provide advice and assistance, but you are expected to organise your trip independently. If you need a letter from the Castan Centre to acquire a visa we can provide that.

Can I speak to a previous intern about their experiences?

All successful interns will have a chance to meet former interns at the cross cultural training day. We will also put you in touch with prior interns from your host organisation (assuming it is not the first year the internship is offered).

Global Interns also document their experiences on the Castan Centre Global Intern blog. Their posts include updates on the work they are doing, reflections on the experiences they have had, and photos and videos of their time overseas, so you should definitely look at them.

Do I need to supply a written letter of reference?

You do not need to provide letters of reference. We ask that you simply provide the names and contact details of two referees on your CV.
