After participating in the Access Monash Mentoring Program in her final two years of school, Jaspreet chose to study at Monash. ‘My mentor was a nursing student who shared her experiences with me and helped me gain a deeper understanding of what it was like to study nursing at Monash and how much she had valued her time at Monash and the opportunities available,’ and Jaspreet certainly made the most of her time here.
In addition to her studies, Jaspreet took advantage of the fantastic opportunities to volunteer at the university; contributing as a peer mentor to help first-year nursing students adjust to their new environment, and in 2022 served as the president of Monash University's nursing club, where she was involved in organising some fantastic events for the nursing cohorts. And she then took the opportunity to “give back”, taking part in Monash University's Access Monash Mentoring program, this time as the mentor for students in high school who were considering a career in nursing. She also began working as an RUSON (Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing), a position that was in high demand during the pandemic, ‘This was a wonderful experience, I worked throughout my undergraduate degree and gained a lot of knowledge and skills from the nurses I worked with’.
Now having completed her degree and having received her registration, Jaspreet is working in a public hospital where she will spend the first six months in the Emergency Department, before moving through another rotation. As she enters the healthcare workforce, Jaspreet has these words of advice for anybody considering studying a similar course, ‘Go for it without a doubt! In my own experience, it was one of the best choices I ever made. I really enjoyed my time as a nursing student, especially during my placements and clinical skills classes where I made friends for life. I have never felt alone or lost during my time at university because I always had the support of the nurses and educators who I would work with as well as the university staff, who are always willing to help.
There are many different streams you can enter as a nurse because the field is continuously changing. I would also advise you to just have faith in yourself since, by becoming a nurse, you would significantly improve the lives of others!’
