What are our Flagship Rich Educational Experiences?

At Monash, learning goes far beyond lectures and tutorials. Our Flagship Rich Educational Experiences (FREE units) are hands-on study experiences designed to help you apply your university learning in real-world settings, whether that’s overseas, in industry, through research, or in the community.

These units are built into eligible degrees as electives, meaning they contribute towards your course credit and won’t add extra time to your degree. Each experience focuses on one of four key areas:

• Global immersion – travel overseas and work alongside local communities, organisations, and students to explore global challenges firsthand.
• Industry experience – collaborate with industry partners, startups and organisations to solve genuine problems and build professional skills.
• Research and discovery – work alongside researchers on projects tackling complex issues and emerging ideas.
• Volunteering and community outreach – create meaningful impact through community-led projects while building confidence and leadership skills.

Instead of simply learning about ideas in a lecture or tutorial, these experiences provide you with the opportunity to actively test, explore and apply your skills in practical settings, transforming your learning into meaningful experiences that broaden your perspective, deepen your understanding and prepare you for what’s next after you graduate.
