Pathway options: there’s more than one way into Monash
Pathways to Monash | Entry requirements | What are entry schemes | What are pathways | Removing barriers
If you don’t meet the entry requirements for direct entry into your chosen Monash course, try not to lose heart. There are many other ways to become a Monash student.
At Monash, we have a range of entry schemes and pathways designed to recognise your talent and support your journey to university.
The difference between an entry scheme and a pathway? We’ll dive into more detail in this article, but in simple terms, entry schemes adjust your ATAR to help you into a course, and your personal circumstances help determine your eligibility for the relevant scheme.
On the other hand, if you don’t meet the course entry requirements for direct entry, pathways offer alternative routes to become a Monash student, even if you initially fall short of the standard entry criteria.
Depending on your circumstances, one or both of these options may be available to you as a backup plan.
Understanding university entry requirements
To make sure that you get into the course you want at Monash, there are specific requirements which you need to meet, which include:
- Minimum age requirements
- Academic entry requirements
- English language requirements, and
- Prerequisite subject and additional requirements.
The course entry requirements are best found on the relevant course page of the course you want to study.
If you meet the entry requirements for the course you want to study, then you’re all set to apply to study at Monash.
But if you need extra support or another route, you can consider the options below.
What are entry schemes?
We know that your ATAR doesn’t always reflect your full potential or academic ability. Entry schemes are designed to recognise students who may have faced challenges throughout their schooling but have the talent, determination and potential to succeed at university.
That’s why we offer a range of entry schemes that take your individual circumstances into account, helping ensure that capable students have every opportunity to receive an offer.
What’s the difference between the Monash Guarantee and equity schemes (SEAS)?
In simple terms, the Monash Guarantee promises entry at a lower ATAR, while the equity schemes (SEAS) adjust your ATAR. All Victorian universities use equity schemes, whereas the Monash Guarantee applies only to Monash University. Operating both schemes ensures we can help as many students as possible.
Depending on your situation and background, you could be eligible for one, the other, or both. You don’t have to choose between them – just ensure you have submitted an equity schemes and scholarships application through VTAC, and Monash will apply the scheme that provides you with the best outcome.
In both cases, you must still meet any other course requirements. These could include subject prerequisites (e.g., minimum study scores in particular subjects) or a range of criteria [RC], such as an audition, interview, or folio.
What are pathways?
If you don’t meet the entry requirements for direct entry into your chosen course, there are still plenty of options available. We offer two one-year diploma pathways that, upon successful completion, allow you to progress directly into the second year of your destination degree.
We've also highlighted a range of other pathway options below to help you find the pathway that's right for you.
