Experience the transformative impact of the Global Immersion Guarantee (GIG) - Monash's flagship international study initiative.
We're committed to delivering the GIG program as Monash's signature and transformative international study initiative. We continue to be guided by Australia's public health and travel advice and are working closely with our in-country partners to resume activities as soon as we can. Eligible students will receive more information about applying in semester one. Read more about Monash's response to COVID-19, and plans for reactivating international study.
GIG is a funded fieldwork unit (12 credit points) that takes you to one of eight countries at the end of your first year.
Flights, accommodation, visas and all program costs are paid for while you’re abroad - you just need to cover the MON2100 tuition fees, some food and spending money!
While abroad, learn from local leaders about how they're working to address the human impact on the environment in different local contexts, and see first-hand how to balance environmental protection, and sustainability with economic and social development.
You'll put your degree into practice by responding to some of the world’s biggest challenges, through a combination of online and face-to-face learning.
While abroad, engage with people and organisations leading solutions to some of the most pressing global challenges at the local level. You'll be able to gain an understanding of the complexities and challenges involved in implementing sustainable and innovative solutions - skills that employers look for.

You can travel to one of eight countries - Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, China or Italy.
Drawing on each country's Monash network, you’ll visit our partner universities and local field sites, and learn from local businesses, government, non-government organisations (NGOs), social enterprises and youth groups, among others, about how to respond to the human impact on the environment.
You can participate in the GIG unit if you:
- Are in your first year of enrollment in an undergraduate degree at Monash University
- Are enrolled in an eligible degree
- Have a minimum 50 WAM in your first semester of study
- Have completed a minimum of 12 credit points in your first semester of study
- Are aged 18 or above at the time of departure
*Please note that your participation in the unit may also be subject to a check of your general misconduct history. Where you have been found to have committed general misconduct or have general misconduct allegations pending against you, you may be removed from the unit.
