RED AUSTRALIA
The unit will run from 22 June to 24 July 2026, with face-to-face intensive classes running Monday to Thursday from 29 June to 16 July 2026.
Some online ‘pre-work’ will be required before face-to-face classes, including a short report after classes conclude. This intensive format mirrors real-world interdisciplinary research practices and will allow you to achieve a lot in a short amount of time.
Just like professional research practice, the RED unit has no exams.

No matter what your chosen degree or specialisation is, this unit aims to equip you with the skills you need to conduct research across a variety of disciplines.
These skills are important for any student who wishes to gain confidence in their capacity to influence change, apply innovative practices, intervene in society and solve problems through collaboration. This unit will allow you to add a layer of complementary research skills to your existing disciplinary training, no matter your field.

Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria. RED is offered as an intensive unit in June and July. For questions about how to fit RED into your degree or how it might impact your enrolment, please contact Monash Connect.
A range of challenges will be offered that are aligned with the global challenges of the age and connected to interdisciplinary research challenges already happening at Monash. Before commencing in the unit, you’ll submit a preference about which interdisciplinary research project you're interested in working on, then you'll be matched with a particular research challenge based on your submission, and will work with an interdisciplinary team to support you in your journey.
The skills you'll gain will be highly transferable to all types of careers - whether you want to work as a researcher, in an NGO/NPO, technical role, corporation, in public service or just want to create your own start-up.
Like other units, you'll receive a final mark on the assessments that you submit as part of the degree. Assessments in RED consist of individual and group assessments that include reflective practices, reports and presentations of your experimentation and discovery.
Reflection is a thread in this unit, as the experience of working within and beyond your own discipline aims to help you understand your emerging professional identity and the impact you can have in an interdisciplinary team.
Just like professional research practice, the RED unit has no exams.
