How does Monash Innovation Guarantee Postgraduate (MIG-P) work?

MIG Postgraduate will take place as an intensive winter unit held in June. You'll work in a small team to deliver a purpose-driven solution to a real-world challenge set by an industry partner organisation, ranging from commercial or social enterprises, a government or UN agency, or a start-up company. You can even preference the industry challenge that you would like to work on. Choose the project that helps you build the skills and networks that suit your career goals and personal values!

You'll be coached through an innovation process used by the most successful global companies, and in your teams, you'll each apply your disciplinary expertise to design a solution. You'll have regular presentations, industry check-ins, progress checks and advice from your coach to help you design your solution.

Monash Innovation Guarantee Postgraduate is open to Monash postgraduate coursework (Masters) students across all faculties. You can enrol in the MIG unit, and start your industry project in July 2026, if you:

are enrolled in an eligible degree,
have completed at least 24 credit points of study, and
have at least 6 points of elective credit available.

If you satisfy the above requirements, you can enrol in the MIG Postgraduate via WES. Please contact Monash Connect if you would like your coursework checked for eligibility.

MIG Postgraduate will commence in July 2026 and run intensively for three weeks from 6–23 July 2026. The unit runs Monday to Thursday in Week 1, Monday to Thursday in Week 2, and Monday to Wednesday in the final week.
This format mirrors real-world innovation practices and will allow you to achieve a lot in a short amount of time. There is some online pre-work to complete before you start the intensive unit and this will provide you with everything you need to know to get started!
You'll undertake workshops at 750 Collins Street, in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. This is a 3-minute walk from Southern Cross station and provides access to industry partners.

No, any student, from any degree, will benefit. No matter your discipline and background, this unit will build your professional confidence. Develop the skills to influence change, intervene in society, create social and environmental impact, and solve problems through applying innovation tools.
Innovation skills are important for creating a positive impact in any workplace, sector or disciplinary context. They are valuable for those aspiring to roles in large corporations, SMEs, the UN or government, through to those who want to work for a charity or create their startup.
Students in this unit come from all disciplinary backgrounds. Why? A diversity of perspectives generates creativity, the foundation of innovation. All are welcome from engineering and science to arts, design, music, business and beyond. To enrol, you must be from an eligible degree with 6 points of elective space available.
No, this is a unit for everyone. It will open up your future opportunities by introducing you to purposeful innovation. You'll learn why innovation matters for your next steps and start to explore and develop your professional identity.
MIG Postgraduate will increase your employability because innovation skills are in demand in all workplaces and disciplinary fields. You'll learn how to seize opportunity in disruption and manage a dynamic career. Learn how to harness innovation skills to create a positive impact in the world - no matter your passions.
The unit allows you to layer innovation skills on top of your existing disciplinary training; this will help you apply your disciplinary expertise in real-world contexts. The skills developed are highly complementary to your degree, no matter your field.
No, you just need a curious mind and a willingness to get involved. This unit is the perfect way to start learning how to engage in a professional context. It aims to boost your employability, your professional confidence and your industry networks.
There is something for everyone! We offer challenges from corporations, SMEs, Not-For-Profits, government and UN agencies, and startups. Whether you're interested in social impact, government roles or digital or technical challenges, you'll likely find a challenge that suits you.
In most cases, students will gain one of their top 5 preferences. No matter the industry challenge you work on, you'll gain valuable skills, mindsets, networks and tools for your career.
In MIG Postgraduate, you will focus on learning an innovation practice, process and mindset - through ‘doing’ or in other words through experience. The skills developed are transferable to all types of careers, whether you want to work in an NPO, a technical role, a corporation, a government role, or create your own startup. After you set your preferences, you will be matched to a particular industry challenge based on your interests and skills.
During the unit, you will work with an interdisciplinary team, an industry partner and a coach to create an innovative solution to the challenge. You'll have lots of support along the way.
Like other units, you'll receive a final mark. There are no exams. The assessment comprises both individual (70%) and group work (30%). There is scheduled class time for guided assessment development throughout the three-week program.
Individual tasks (70%)
- Two reflective tasks
  - A 3-minute video reflection on your emerging professional identity (10%; start of the unit)
  - LinkedIn posts reflecting your interests in innovation (10%; end of the unit)
- A quick professional scenarios quiz on a key concept for the week (5% per week; total 15%)
- A final implementation report for industry (35%; two weeks after the unit concludes). You will have built much of this during scheduled workshops.
Group tasks (30%)
- The first 6-minute pitch (15%) occurs at the end of Week 2 during class. You'll present your early ideas to a small group of peers and coaches. Several or all members may speak during this short pitch.
- The second 6-minute pitch (15%) occurs at the end of the program (Week 3) during pitch night. It is an enhanced and iterated version of your first pitch. This time you'll present to your coach and your industry partner.
Training, and templates or examples, are provided for assessment tasks.
You'll notice that reflection is a thread in this unit, as the experience of applying innovation practices to a real-world challenge will help you further understand your emerging professional identity and the impact you can have as part of an interdisciplinary team. The unit is bookended by small individual reflection tasks.

The MIG Postgraduate unit is delivered in person only, to support the style of teamwork and industry activities we will run for the creation of innovative solutions.

Throughout the MIG Postgraduate program, you will receive support and guidance from industry and academic experts, your teammates, your industry partner and your specialist coach.
There's plenty of time in workshops for you and your peers to work on assessments together, with assistance from your coach.
We aim to ensure the assessments are exciting, practical and 'doable'!
After enrolment changes, we will email you a list of industry challenges. We will invite you to set your preferences. To set your preferences, go to Moodle after it opens and find the preferencing tab. Read about all the different industry challenges on offer and set your top 5 choices.
Consider your values and interests as well as the skills and networks you would like to build. We will reveal your challenge when the in-person program begins.

MIG Postgraduate Digital Badge - ‘Innovation for Impact’
Attain industry endorsement for your purpose-driven solution to a real-world challenge facing a commercial or social enterprise, a government or UN agency, or a start-up. To be endorsed, the solution presented to industry must drive social or environmental value and must be considered innovative, valuable, feasible and implementable by the industry partner.
To earn a MIG Postgraduate digital badge:
1. Apply innovation methods and mindsets to design purpose-driven solutions for industry
2. Deliver a solution that is considered innovative, valuable, feasible and implementable by industry, and achieve a grade of 80% or above in the final industry implementation plan and career and leadership plan
3. Present a compelling pitch to industry stakeholders in person and achieve a grade of 75% or above
4. Collaborate with industry and interdisciplinary teams in all coaching and collaboration workshops.
Digital badges for these programs commenced in November 2024. Badges cannot be issued for achievements before this date.
Absolutely not! MIG is all about supporting you and nurturing your confidence in a way that feels right for you. Public speaking can be intimidating for many, and you don't need any prior experience or comfort in this area to join MIG. If you're looking for a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment to develop your skills, MIG is the perfect place for you.
While there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and build your confidence if you choose, speaking in front of groups of others is never mandatory. We also offer informal, optional chances to practice speaking in both small and large groups, allowing you to ease into it at your own pace, should you wish to. There is also lots of fun, engaging training on offer.
