The program

Monash Student Communities offers both online and on-campus activities. Get involved in our on-campus college games, sporting events, BBQs and movie nights, or connect with other students online using one of our virtual platforms.

About the role

Advisers are trained volunteers who shape the college experience by providing friendship, support and mentoring to their peers. Responsibilities include providing mentoring and support for up to 15 college members, assisting with and attending college events, participating in training and development opportunities and liaising with the college support team.

Who can participate?

To be eligible, you must

  • excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with people from a range of backgrounds
  • a desire to participate, make new friends and have fun
  • effective time management skills (able to balance study and additional commitments)
  • initiative and teamwork
  • a broad understanding of student issues
  • previous volunteering experience (this is preferred, but not essential).

Time commitment

The role is for 12 months, running from January to December. During this time, advisers volunteer for approximately 10 hours a fortnight.

Pre-volunteering module

All staff and students will need to complete a short module, Foundations of Volunteering before undertaking any volunteering activities. Get started here!

★ Can this count towards Volunteering in Practice (MON2000)? 

Yes! Student Communities Adviser volunteering can count towards elective unit MON2000, except in circumstances where the college adviser is receiving a scholarship for their work in the program.

★ Can this count towards the volunteering digital badge?

Yes! Student Communities Adviser volunteering can count towards the Impact through Ethical Volunteering badge, except in circumstances where the college adviser is receiving a scholarship for their work in the program.
