AI and assessments

At Monash, you may be allowed to use artificial intelligence (AI) in your assessments. It is important that you understand how to identify if you can use these tools, what you are allowed to do, and what responsibilities you have when you use them.
Key considerations when using AI in your assessments

Why do different assessments have different rules about the use of AI?
AI is now integrated into many tools and learning technologies, and it is expected that this trend will continue. To ensure you are equipped with the skills you need for your future careers and pathways, your assessments may allow you to use AI. However, there are still going to be times when human skills and knowledge are going to be needed. Further, depending on your degree, accrediting bodies may also need you to demonstrate that you have particular knowledge and skills in order to be awarded your degree. Because of this, AI may be restricted in some of your assessments. This is why checking what is allowed for every assessment is important.
Using AI in an assessment
Each assessment will have a statement on how AI can and cannot be used. You can find these in the detailed assessment instructions of the Assessments page on Moodle. An example of one of these statements is below.

Though the exact wording of the AI statements may vary depending on the requirements of the assessment, there are three board categories of use:

Acknowledging AI in your assessment
Acknowledge your use of AI is an important part of all assessments where AI is permitted. This is a statement included in your submission that outlines how you have used AI to develop the assessment. If you have used AI as a source of information, you may also need to cite it. If AI is permitted in an assessment, and you have not used it, you need to acknowledge this as well. Your unit may provide a template or this resource has useful templates to help you acknowledge your use of AI.
Tracking your AI use
Keeping track of what you ask AI and then how you use the output will allow you to accurately demonstrate and acknowledge your use of AI. There are a few techniques you can use to make this process easier.
Academic integrity and AI use in assessments
It is important that you follow assessment instructions regarding the use of AI. If you don’t, you may breach assessment conditions (Student Academic Integrity Procedure, 2022). This occurs when you use AI in a way that is not permitted in an assessment, or fail to acknowledge its use correctly.
Alongside breaching assessment protocols, you also need to think critically about the responses from AI as not all the information it produces is correctly attributed or original. This may lead to plagiarism or fraud.
