Frequently asked questions
What works are planned for 2026 and in the future?
Construction of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) Monash Station, to be located at the corner of Normanby and Howleys roads, will be completed in stages across several years until operation in 2035.
Construction stages and activities:
- Initial and early works to prepare the site began in 2023 and have now been completed. These works included utility relocations, modifications to road intersections, excavation and construction of tunnel access structures and installation of power supply to prepare for main works.
- Main works will commence in April 2026, focusing on establishing the construction site to support station building and tunnel boring activities.
- Tunnel boring is expected to commence in early 2027, beginning off-campus and progressing north under the campus during the year.
- Post-2027, the construction of the station will include above-ground structures, road and path upgrades and landscaping.
SRL trains are expected to be running by 2035.
The Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA) will continue to provide detailed information on upcoming works to Monash University, which will be distributed to relevant students and staff.

What has happened to Normanby House student accommodation?
We’re dedicated to supporting Monash University Accommodation residents throughout the duration of the SRL project. Normanby House has made way for the new SRL East station at Clayton campus.
In 2025, Monash University Accommodation successfully accommodated 2024 Normanby House residents in other Monash University Accommodation halls, provided they met the Monash University Accommodation Admissions Policy. Residents can email any questions about the SRL project to mrs.mmo@monash.edu.
Will another student accommodation option be made available to students?
New student accommodation is being developed in the North East Precinct of the Clayton campus, alongside College Walk and north of Jock Marshall Reserve. Construction is underway and is anticipated for completion in mid-2027. Read more.
What has happened to the Monash Community Family Co-operative?
The Monash Community Family Co-operative childcare facility has been relocated to 11 Duerdin Street, Notting Hill – less than a 15 minute walk from its current location.
Will I still be able to get to the Clayton campus during construction of the SRL project?
Yes, all public transport services to Clayton campus will continue to operate. Private vehicle access to campus will remain open, however traffic disruptions along Howleys and Normanby roads are expected. On-campus parking options will remain available for students, staff and visitors.
Will I still be able to park in the student parking adjacent to Roberts and Richardson Halls?
Yes, the Residential Car Park (RC6) will still be available for students. Access and the number of parking spots available may be temporarily disrupted during SRL works.
The SRLA will provide detailed information on upcoming works to Monash University to distribute to students and staff.
Will construction noise disturb my studies?
Monash has invested in acoustic upgrades to lower the impact of future works at the SRL site. Monash University Accommodation hall upgrades commenced in December 2024 and are scheduled to run until March 2026.
While the majority of works will take place during summer breaks to minimise disruptions, some pre-construction activities may occur outside these periods. Any such works will be carefully coordinated with Monash University Accommodation in advance to ensure minimal impact on residents.
Monash University Accommodation will keep residents informed and provide timely communication regarding upcoming works as planning progresses.
The SRLA and its contractors continue to work with the University to minimise any noise impacts from the works. Contractors must develop and adhere to a Construction Environmental Management Plan to control the impacts of construction, including noise, dust, vibration and traffic.
Why is the Monash Station located far away from the Campus Centre and existing bus interchange off Wellington Road?
The Monash Station will be located north of Normanby Road with a primary station entrance to the south opening towards the University, and a second entrance to the north of the station providing connections to the Monash Technology Precinct.
The location provides the opportunity to develop a new city centre to support growing employment in the Monash Technology Precinct and is centrally located to provide access to the University and globally recognised facilities.
Positioning the station north of Normanby Road and the tunnel on the eastern side of Clayton campus minimises impacts to the University and globally recognised medical and research facilities in the Monash Technology Precinct including the CSIRO, Australian Synchrotron and the nation’s first dedicated cardiac hospital, Victorian Heart Hospital, during construction.
When can I catch a train from the SRL station at Monash?
SRL trains are expected to be running by 2035.
Will there be a rail line constructed on campus?
No, the SRL will be an underground rail line running from Cheltenham to Box Hill, passing underneath Clayton campus. The SRLA worked closely with the University on planning the exact positioning of the rail alignment underground.
Will the construction (including tunnelling) and operation of the SRL beneath the Clayton campus affect the University’s facilities?
The University is working closely with the SRLA to understand what, if any, impacts there will be from the construction and operation of the SRL, and what can be done to avoid or reduce any impacts.
