New Clayton campus student accommodation

New student accommodation is being developed in the North East Precinct of the Clayton campus, alongside College Walk and north of Jock Marshall Reserve. Set to enhance the on-campus living experience and expand capacity, this 252-bed hall underscores our commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable, and modern residential spaces for students.

Honouring Emeritus Professor Richard Larkins AC

Monash University has named the new Clayton campus student accommodation Larkins Hall, in honour of former Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Richard Larkins AC, recognising his distinguished career in medicine, research and academic leadership.

The naming acknowledges Professor Larkins’ service as Monash Vice‑Chancellor and President from 2003 to 2009 and his enduring contribution to advancing education, research and public health. Awarded Australia’s highest civilian honour, Companion of the Order of Australia, his legacy will be celebrated through this new hall, opening in mid‑2027.

Overview

Construction has commenced and is anticipated for completion in mid-2027.

As the southern gateway to the existing Clayton Residential Village, the project site is bordered to the north by a Monash University Accommodation car park, Deakin Hall and associated car park to the east, and the Jock Marshall Reserve and Biological Sciences Building to the south.

Sustainable Residential Precinct

The design of the new student accommodation will embrace the site's unique topography and landscape, creating an engaging residential precinct. The development will feature sustainable and high-quality living that enable students to connect, belong, and collaborate in a welcoming and supportive environment.

For every tree removed to clear the land for the new building, additional trees will be planted to restore and enhance the natural environment.

Proposed features of the new accommodation include:

  • Single Occupancy Units (SOU) with ensuite bathrooms, refrigerators, built-in desks, wardrobes and shelving
  • A reception and after hours desk for student support and safety
  • Communal kitchen, dining, and lounge areas on every floor
  • A vibrant ground floor with a bike arrival station, communal laundry, game zone, music room, parcel lockers, digital gaming space, and reading nook
  • Mobility-accessible units, and units designed for hearing and speech-impaired students
  • Tranquil bush setting overlooking the Jock Marshall Reserve
  • Full air-conditioning throughout all areas to ensure resident comfort year-round.
Please note: All proposed features are subject to final building design and approval.
