Gender-based violence

Gender-based violence is any form of physical or non-physical violence, harassment, abuse or threats, based on gender and gender identity, that results in, or is likely to result in harm, coercion, control, fear or deprivation of liberty or autonomy. Gender is a social concept. It includes personal and societal understandings of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation. The nature and impact of gender-based violence can vary across cultures and communities.

Monash recognises the right of individuals to affirm their gender identity and expect effective and appropriate responses to gender-based violence.

The following acts of harm and violence driven by gender inequality are recognised forms of gender-based violence:

Getting support

We’re committed to preventing and responding to gender-based violence. We take a trauma-informed, person-centred approach and work across the whole community to create a safe, welcoming university where everyone can learn and work without fear of harm. The victim-survivor is never at fault and is in no way responsible for the actions of the perpetrator.

You can have a confidential discussion about your options with the Safer Community Unit – they can offer expert help, advice and support while you consider what you’d like to do. The final decision is an important personal choice – and yours alone to make.

Report an incident or concern

Our approach is guided by the Strategic Commitment to Gender-based Violence and Sexual Harm Prevention and Response (pdf) and regulated by the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence (pdf).
