Getting to know.....

1. What was the last movie you went to and what did you think?
The last movie I went to was the new Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. I absolutely loved it - the visuals in particular were fantastic. Beauty and the Beast was always my favourite fairy tale growing up (I watched the original Disney cartoon repeatedly and read various adaptations of the story) so seeing this new film brought back a wonderful nostalgic feeling, but I also enjoyed seeing it as an adult and reflecting on some of the debate the story has attracted in recent months.
2. What did you want to be when you were small?
An archaeologist. From about the age of 6 this was my career ambition. I used to love digging around in the dirt for 'treasures' when I was little in my family's backyard in Canada (finding bits of broken plates and bottles), but as I got older the appeal of digging faded and I became a historian instead. Not as messy to work in an archive!
3. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Poutine (a Canadian classic - cheese curds, fries and gravy), although if I ate that for the rest of my life I wouldn't live very long!
4. If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be?
I'd love to have a meal with 4 of the medieval women my doctoral thesis focused on. Heloise of the Paraclete, Constance of le Ronceray, Matilda of Scotland and Hersende of Fontevraud. Their lives and writings are fascinating windows into women's experience, and reflections on gender and the ethics of love, during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. They are some of my heroes!
5. What was the last book you read?
The last novel I finished was Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay. A must for anyone into the historical fantasy genre!
