Book Launch: Dr Iori Hamada’s new book The Japanese Restaurant: Tasting the New Exotic in Australia (Routledge, 2023)

Book Launch Event held on the 24th of November, 2023

Guests

We are delighted to report the successful book launch held recently at our school, an event that drew an impressive turnout despite being towards the year’s end. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who joined us on this special day. The book launch event, organised and supported by Director Professor Paul Long and Manager Liz Thompson of the Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre, was honoured with the presence of special guests Dr Susan Carland and Associate Professor David Slucki.

Their participation greatly enriched the discussions. Following Dr Hamada’s opening talk, our panel engaged in deeply interdisciplinary dialogues, delving into the intricate dynamics of food politics and exploring critical issues related to the theme. We are particularly grateful to our audience members who shared their personal insights and stories, adding an extra layer of engagement and connection to the event. Their contributions were invaluable and helped bring the topics discussed to life in a very real and relatable way.

A special mention must be made of the delightful catering provided by the Japanese café/grocery shop, Hibiki / Future in Camberwell. The exquisite Japanese lunch boxes, or obento, along with beverages and sweets, added a unique flair to the event. We extend our special thanks to Reiji Honour, the co-owner of the establishment, for his support and for providing such delightful culinary offerings.

This event was a testament to the power of community, collaboration and shared knowledge. We are excited about the future initiatives and discussions that will stem from this enriching experience.
