Monash University Korean Studies Call for Korean Language Student Teaching and Research Assistants Semester 1 2025 (February 24-June 6, 2025)

Dear Korean Studies students,

This year, Monash University Korean Studies will require student language teaching and research assistants to help with the teaching of Korean language units and the administration of conversation circles and language exchange programmes. The duties will include the following:

Student teaching/research assistants will be expected to

● aid the teacher during online and face-to-face (Korean language) workshops and tutorials

● help set up equipment and organise students in hybrid classes (if necessary)

● help to monitor students in Korean introductory 1 workshops

● answer student questions in Korean introductory 1 workshops

● provide models for the practice of target structures in Korean introductory 1 workshops

● facilitate students during pair and group work activities in Korean introductory 1 workshops

Student teaching/research assistants may also be invited to

● run one-hour online speaking and writing drop-in sessions where they will help students with their work and answer questions in English

● be involved in the preparation of teaching and learning materials to help students develop their Korean language skills

● help provide test/exam feedback

● help set up and administer the conversation circles programme

● help set up and administer the language exchange programme

● help Korean studies educators with learning materials development for the teaching of short courses to students outside Monash University

● teach short courses to students outside Monash University

· help with ongoing research projects of Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub researchers including research into use of Korean, textbook design, hanmun

Preference will be given to students who

● are current Monash students

● have a good record of punctuality and consistent attendance at class

● are reliable and respond rapidly to email correspondence

● can guarantee that they will have ample time for their student TA duties during the semester and that their schedule is not disrupted by part-time job commitments or teaching placements

● regularly and actively participated in Korean Studies classes and extracurricular events

● have studied at least 2 Korean Studies units at Monash

● are at least at the equivalent of Korean Proficient level 1 or above

● have a valid WWC check (this can be obtained later)

● intend to continue to regularly attend Korean Studies units at Monash over the next year.

● are outgoing, motivated, and independent.

You should nominate a Korean Studies lecturer or teaching associate who you think would be prepared to vouch for your abilities.

● At least one teaching assistant should be available for the times of the main workshops in ATS1171/2171 (to be announced)

In your reply, you MUST include the following information.

Your current major
Your year of study (2nd, 3rd etc)
Your availability for weeks 1-12 in S1, 2025 (March 3-May 30, 2025)
Whether you expect to be absent from Monash because you are on placement or because of your part time job (please indicate when you cannot work as a student TA).
A statement confirming your punctuality at class, regular attendance at class, and timely completion of all assignments and grades. You should estimate approximately how many of your scheduled classes you attended over the past year (10% 100% 75% etc).
The number of Korean units you have taken
The units you intend to take over the next 12 months
Your mobile phone number
Your current Monash email address
Your non-Monash regular email address
Weekly hours are NEGOTIABLE.

The successful candidate will gain valuable experience, a good reference and be paid hourly (at Hew03 level).
